Heroes of Twente

Bachelor Graduation Project for 100%FAT and Concordia

Graduation Project at 100%FAT

‘Twentse Helden’ (Heroes of Twente) was my graduation project for Creative Technology BSc at the University of Twente. The company that provided the project was 100%FAT, a relatively young company based in Enschede specialized in interactive installations and experiences. They gave me and Jelle Wolbers the responsibility to do research for a new project of theirs with Concordia as client. Both Jelle and me had our own topic but we worked together along the way. Concordia is an organization in Enschede that provides arts, film and theatre. Next to a theatre, they facilitate an exhibition space in the city center of Enschede. This exhibition facility suffers a decrease in visitors. They wanted to solve this by placing an interactive installation on the facade of the building, to attract the pedestrian’s attention and create more awareness. My task was to find out what kind of installation suited this situation and come up with a concept. The result was a concept design and a list of recommendations of interactive elements to use for 100%FAT.

Designing for Interaction

With a literature study I identified important elements for an interactive installation in public, and with this information I made a list of requirements for the installation for Concordia. Next, I identified the target group for the installation for Concordia, which were in short people living in Enschede going from a to b that are interested in modern arts. Then, I needed to design a concept and test the list of requirements and principles of this concept with a prototype. In the meanwhile, we (100%FAT, Concordia, Jelle and me) decided that the theme of the installation would be about famous people from the region Twente. Furthermore, it needed to be an interactive game on the façade. I designed a concept consisting of several interactive mini games that would tell a story about a famous person. All these little stories combined would tell the proud history of Twente. One of these elements was a One Handed Bandit (gambling machine) that would not cash out money but quotes of Herman Finkers, a famous comedian from Twente. This became my prototype for the user tests. See my project report (download below) with more explanation on the requirements, experiments and results.
